Msheireb Doha presents Holo-capsule to message future generations

Msheireb Doha proudly presents Holo-capsule Portal, a unique opportunity to leave holographic messages for future generations. The concept itself is inspired by time capsules and their possibility to preserve a specific moment in the present for the future.

The innovative project carries the name “Hi, How R U?” and presents a holo-capsule portal that offers a futuristic form of communication, proposing spontaneous connections across huge distances and languages to overcome cultural differences. The term “time capsule” was first used at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, where metal tubes filled with objects, texts in many languages, and communication devices were preserved for citizens of the distant future to discover.

“Hi, How R U ?” aims to recreate the venture using today’s forms of communication and is a part of Msheireb Downtown Doha’s continuous endeavors to satisfy its visitors with the latest cultural experiences. It will allow people to leave messages of love, wisdom, hope, advice, or warnings, and even leave a holo-recording as a form of time capsule. Visitors will also be able to interact in real-time with passersby at a paired portal site in the district of Msheireb in Doha, Qatar, a sustainable smart city.

In collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, Msheireb Downtown Doha took another creative step toward enabling Qatar’s citizens and visitors to enjoy one of the most immersive cultural experiences. It will be available until July 2022 at Msheireb Galleria in Msheireb Downtown Doha as a part of “FUTURES”, the Smithsonian’s first major exploration of the future, designed to be a part-exhibition, part-festival.

The Smithsonian curator Ashley Molese noted, “One of the greatest wonders of our lives today is our ability to instantly meet each other across space and time.” Director of the Arts & Industries Building (AIB) at Smithsonian Rachel Goslins visited Msheireb Museums to strengthen the partnership and explore more opportunities for future collaboration. Two parties also exchanged information on scientific research to be used in future studies.

As Msheireb Downtown Doha is considered the world’s biggest regeneration project of the downtown while Smithsonian Institution has the capsule at the oldest U.S. National Museum, it is clear that these associations share common values and the mission of maintaining old architectural sites while integrating the latest technology innovations.

Dr. Hafez Ali Ali, Director of Marketing and Communications, Msheireb Properties said: “We are honored to present such an innovative experience to our visitors in Doha, at our smart and sustainable city Msheireb Downtown Doha. This futuristic vision in collaboration with one of the most prominent intuitions, the Smithsonian Institution, reiterates our leading position as the first choice of partnerships with international entities.

The holo capsule portal is unique, and immersive and offers an important opportunity for visitors to instantly interact with their peers in the US. It is an amazing experience that adds great value to human studies and gives us an idea about the future of communication.”

The project is supported by the Embassy of the State of Qatar and is a part of the Qatar-USA Year of Cultural activations. It opens new paths for artistic collaboration, cultural connection, and understanding across the globe.
