40 million applicants submitted to attend the tournament and about 1.2 million tickets have already been purchased for World Cup
With such an amazing number of expected visitors, ensuring safety and order is definitely a challenge for Qatar. Luckily, NATO confirmed on Thursday its assistance in providing security measures during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It will be a part of the bloc’s close cooperation with Doha.
The North Atlantic alliance noted in a statement “The support will include training against threats posed by Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) materials, which will be delivered by Slovakia and NATO’s Joint CBRN Defense Centre of Excellence in the Czech Republic”.
Romania will put through the training for the protection of very important people (VIPs) as well as to avert threats posed by improvised explosive devices.
“A first training session dealing with Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear threats was conducted in May this year in Slovakia,” it added.
Turkey participate in security operations
Qatari and Turkish delegations held a meeting earlier this month in Doha to discuss security matters for hosting the major tournament in November. Their interior ministers have signed an agreement to join efforts in organizing the much-waited football event.
Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu said in January that his country will temporarily send 3,250 security officers to Qatar.
Forces involved in this operation include 3,000 riot police officers, 100 Turkish special forces, 50 bomb detection dogs and their operators, 50 bomb experts, and others. They will be on duty for about 45 days.
Soylu added that Ankara has also trained 677 Qatari personnel covering 38 different professional areas, according to Al Jazeera.
More security assistance during World Cup
Morocco is another country that has agreed to send specialists to help ensure the safety on the Cup. Rabat-based media reported that Morocco will deploy a team of cybersecurity experts to Qatar.
Doha had requested Rabat’s assistance in securing the event according to the report by Morocco World News. It is a good chance to expand the two countries’ security cooperation.
Ben Wallace, the Secretary of State for Defense of the United Kingdom stated in late May that Britain’s Royal Air Force and Royal Navy are set to provide counter-terror policing during the tournament.
Wallace announced in an official statement that Britain and Qatar will “join forces to provide air policing in the skies”. It happens for the first time in history that Britain provides this level of security for a World Cup held outside the UK.
According to a defense source’s statement for The Telegraph in late May, The Ministry of Defense will support Qatar with military capabilities to counter terrorism and other threats to the tournament through maritime security, operational planning, and command and control support.
