Doha minister of Environment and Climate Change HE Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani contributed campaign and highlighted the need and importance of raising awareness and educating people about the importance of biodiversity.
The event was held in the headquarters of the turtle conservation project, and part of it was cleaning the depths of Fuwairit Beach and releasing baby turtles. Hawksbill sea turtles, which are endangered, are having the hatching season. The project to provide safe places for turtles to nest and hatch was a success, and and the Minister said in a statement that it contributed to enriching the marine environment.
He also pointed out how keen was the ministry to work on that, starting in 2003. and following by the issuance of ministerial resolution No. 37 of 2010 regarding the preservation of the marine environment on protecting turtles and seabirds from extinction.
During the last 5 years, he said, the the ministry’s work team released more than 35,000 baby turtles into the sea.
HE Dr.Faleh Al Thani expressed his appreciation for the measures the ministry has taken to protect the Hawksbill sea turtles, especially regarding water tanks and the initial incubation period for young turtles before they can be released into the sea.
He said that organizing this event on the occasion of World Oceans Day and the beginning of the hatching season of Hawksbill sea turtles is showing the ministry’s commitment to involve the public in preserving the environment.
The current season was very successful, as 98 nests were moved to the protected site at Fuwairit Beach, and the turtle hatching season began more than two months after placing the first nest at the site.
The Minister and other ministry officials released Hawksbill baby turtles.
HE Dr.Faleh Al Than thanked everyone for their effort to ensure the success of the project and honored the authorities that participated, which were ministry officials, a host of volunteers from Qatar Red Crescent and other groups concerned with sustainability.
